The Brownstone Magazine is a digital publication created by Black women, for Black women. We publish work that explores culture, identity, creativity, and lived experience with care and intention. We welcome submissions from writers whose voices align with our mission and who want to contribute thoughtful work to our growing community.

The Brownstone Magazine exists to create space for Black women to tell their stories, share insight, and shape cultural conversations. We’re drawn to work that speaks with honesty, nuance, and a strong sense of voice.
We’re especially interested in pieces that:
Offer original perspective or lived experience
Engage thoughtfully with culture and community
Demonstrate clear storytelling and strong voice
Contribute meaningfully to conversations affecting Black women

Your completed article or pitch
A short author bio (2–3 sentences)
Links to relevant previous work, if available
Your contact information
If you’re pitching an idea, briefly describe your concept, angle, and why it’s a good fit.
Submission Guidelines
Follow the conventions of American grammar and literature
Typical article length: 800–2,000 words (flexible depending on the piece)
Use a 12-point Times New Roman Font
Double space lines throughout the text
Submit in Google Docs or Word format
Work must be original and not previously published
Simultaneous submissions are allowed. Notify us if accepted elsewhere
We edit collaboratively and may suggest revisions if your piece is selected.
What to Expect
Our team reviews every submission with care. Because of volume, response times may vary, but we aim to respond within 2–4 weeks.
If your piece is accepted, we’ll reach out with next steps regarding edits and publication timing.
While we can’t publish every submission, we appreciate the time and trust writers place in sharing their work with us.
Rights & Publication
By submitting, you confirm that you own the rights to your work and grant The Brownstone Magazine permission to publish it digitally and in affiliated formats. Copyright remains with the author.
